About half the cost, and days instead of weeks
New cabinetry is the single largest line in almost every kitchen renovation, which is why replacing it drives the whole project into five figures and multiple weeks. Refacing removes that line. It generally lands around half the cost of new cabinets, and because nothing is being demolished and nothing is waiting on a cabinet order with a four to eight week lead time, the on-site work is usually two to three days. Efficient jobs finish faster than that. Bigger kitchens can run to a week. Either way, you are not living without a kitchen for a month.
How we decide whether your cabinets are worth keeping
We open the doors and look at the boxes. What matters is whether the box is structurally sound, whether the face frame is solid, and whether the layout works for how you actually use the room. If the boxes are water damaged, sagging, coming apart at the joints, or made of material that will not hold a hinge screw any more, refacing is the wrong answer and you will be told that. If the real problem is that the kitchen is laid out badly, refacing gives you a better-looking version of a kitchen you still do not like, which is money spent on the wrong thing. In every other case, and that is most cases, refacing is simply the better deal.
Refacing can change how the kitchen works, not just how it looks
This is the part most people do not realize, and it is the most requested upgrade we do. A lower cabinet with a door and a shelf is close to useless: everything at the back is unreachable and you end up on your knees. That same cabinet can become a bank of drawers, and suddenly the whole space is usable and everything is visible at once. Custom drawers are something we are expert at and build to fit, so you are not limited to whatever sizes come out of a catalogue. Converting doors to drawers during a refacing costs far less than doing it as its own job later, because everything is already open.
A bad face frame is not a dealbreaker
If the face frame, the strip of wood between and around your doors, is damaged or was never good, that does not rule out refacing. We build a new one. The same is true of individual cabinets that have failed: a box under the sink that swelled from a slow leak gets replaced on its own rather than becoming the reason to gut the whole kitchen. It is not all or nothing. We replace what needs replacing, keep what is sound, and finish everything so it reads as one kitchen.
What changes, and what does not
Changing: doors, drawer fronts, hinges and handles, the appearance of the visible frames, and, where you want it, how the cabinets work inside through custom drawers. Optionally the countertop and backsplash, which pair naturally with refacing and are usually what completes the transformation. Not changing: where the cabinet runs sit and the footprint they occupy. If you want an island moved or a run extended, that is a renovation rather than a refacing, and it is work we also do.
Not just kitchens
The same approach works anywhere there is cabinetry worth saving: bathroom vanities, built-in bookcases, laundry rooms, mudroom lockers, and basement bars. A vanity reface is often a single day and changes a bathroom more than people expect for what it costs.
Why more contractors do not offer it
Refacing is precise work. The doors have to be measured and ordered to fractions of an inch, the frames have to be prepared properly so the finish lasts, and everything has to line up across a whole wall where a small error is obvious. It is easier for a contractor to sell you new cabinets. We would rather do the version that keeps twenty or thirty thousand dollars in your pocket and gets you your kitchen back inside a week.
