The subfloor gets dealt with first
Before anything goes down, the subfloor gets checked for flex, for level, and for moisture. Flex is what cracks tile and pops grout lines. Level is what produces gaps and squeaks. Moisture is what destroys wood from below in basements and over slabs. Correcting these adds cost at the start and prevents the far more expensive version of the problem, which is tearing out a floor that was installed over an issue nobody looked for.
Matching the material to the room, especially below grade
Solid hardwood does not belong in a basement, and standard laminate does not belong in a bathroom, regardless of what the box says. Below grade and in wet areas, vinyl plank and tile are the materials that survive. In living areas that stay dry, hardwood and engineered wood are worth what they cost. The recommendation follows the room rather than the showroom display.
Transitions, thresholds, and the details that give a job away
The parts of a flooring job people notice afterward are the edges. Where the new floor meets a different material, how the transition strips are handled, whether the baseboard and shoe molding were removed and reset or just caulked around, whether doors still swing over the new height. These are the details that separate an installation that reads as finished from one that reads as done in a hurry, and they get planned rather than improvised at the end.
Removal and what is underneath old flooring
Old flooring gets removed and taken away as part of the job. It is worth knowing that in older houses there is frequently more than one layer down there, and occasionally what is found underneath changes the plan, whether that is a damaged subfloor or an unexpected height difference. Where that happens you are told what was found and what it means before the work continues.
