Waterproofing goes where water goes, not everywhere
In a shower or a tub surround, the waterproofing membrane behind the tile is what keeps water out of the framing. It has to be continuous, correctly lapped, and detailed properly at the corners, the curb, and around the drain, because those are where it fails. Cement board on its own is not waterproofing. That work is invisible within a day, so you are invited to look at it first. Outside the wet areas it is a different question. A tiled kitchen floor, an entry, a mudroom, or a bathroom floor away from the shower needs a properly prepared and stable base, not a full waterproofing system. Quoting waterproofing on every tile job is a way to pad a number, so we scope it where it does real work and tell you where it does not.
Flatness, and why large-format tile is unforgiving
Large tiles have become the standard look, and they are far less tolerant than small ones. A wall or floor that is slightly out of flat is invisible under a mosaic and glaringly obvious under a large-format tile, showing up as edges that catch the light and each other. Where large tile is going in, the substrate gets flattened to the standard the tile actually requires, which is sometimes more preparation than people expect and is the difference between a wall that looks custom and one that looks off.
Layout is decided before the first tile goes on
Where the pattern starts determines where it ends, and thoughtless layout produces a slivered cut tile in the most visible corner of the room. Layout gets set out first so that cuts land where they are least visible, patterns run out symmetrically, and lines carry through from floor to wall where they should. It costs planning time rather than money and it is most of what makes tile look professionally done.
Regrouting and repair when the tile itself is fine
Not every tired-looking tile job needs replacing. Failed grout, moldy caulk at the joints, and a handful of loose tiles can often be repaired for a fraction of a tear-out, and the result looks close to new. What matters is establishing whether the problem is cosmetic or whether the grout is failing because something behind it is moving or wet, which is a different and more serious answer.
